Wollemi-pine (Wollemia nobilis), Cone of the Month for September, 2023
Illustrated by Cloe Hadley (@hadley.to.be.here)
Another living fossil, this time from Australia! Thought to have been extinct by western science, one small grove was found by a canyoneer in 1994 in Wollemi National Park. Although its shared similarities with Agathis and Araucaria puzzled scientists, its unique cone morphology set it apart as its own genus. It’s so rare there are only a handful of known groves.
Fun Fact: During the devastating 2019-20 bushfire season, firefighters saved the only known grove of these trees, which because a national symbol of hope.
