Western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla), Cone of the Month for February, 2021

Illustrated by Jillian Barthold

Our inaugural cone, the western hemlock is a late successional species in the temperate rainforests of the west coast of North America. With diameters of more than 10 ft (3m) and heights above 300 ft (91 m), this tree starts in the understory, often on nurse logs, and lives to dominate the mature canopy of ancient forests.

Fun Fact: It is often identifiable by its drooping main shoot and feathery foliage.
