White spruce (Picea glauca ), Cone of the Month for March, 2024

Illustrated by Lianne Pflug

When you think spruce, you think cold and inhospitable, and the white spruce is no exception. Growing across the northern reaches of North America, it’s a main component of the boreal forests of Canada and Alaska from the Pacific to the Atlantic and has populations that extend down like fingers through the Rockies and nearby mountain peaks. It even has an isolated population in the Black Hills of South Dakota which are famous for being an outpost for more northern and eastern species.

Fun Fact: There is a commonly planted ornamental cultivar of this species that grows with a tight, pyramidal habit. But, it is prone to reversion, where it seemingly randomly reverts back to its normal, upright habit.
