China-fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata), Cone of the Month for October, 2022
Illustrated by Lucy Wilks
Cunninghamia very well may be the oldest surviving member of the cypress family. Native to eastern Asia, its foliage is unique among cypresses in that it has lanceolate, strap-shaped needles. In China, this is still a very important timber tree.
Fun Fact: Rare among conifers, this tree spouts readily from the base. Because of that, it’s frequently coppiced in order to harvest sprouts for stakes, tool handles, and fence posts.
