Red Pine (Pinus resinosa), Cone of the Month for September, 2024
Illustrated by Chelsea Simmons
The red pine is primarily found in northeastern North America, with a few populations extending as far south as Virginia. Though common today, it exhibits low genetic variation among its populations. This usually suggests that, in its distant past, there was a genetic bottleneck from which the current population emerged. This was likely caused by glaciers, which forced the trees into refugia where they narrowly escaped extinction.
Fun Fact: Its specific epithet, resinosa, refers to its resin, which was collected by Indigenous peoples and used to waterproof canoes.
