Deodar cedar (Cedrus deodara), Cone of the Month for February, 2023

Illustrated by Kathleen Murray

Commonly known as the Himalayan cedar based on its distribution in the mountains of North India and Pakistan, this stately tree grows at elevations from 1,100-3,000 m (3,600-9,800 ft). A large forest tree, this is one of only four species of true cedar worldwide. The needles grow in clusters, with about 30 individual needles per spur shoot giving the branches literal star power.

Fun Fact: The cones grow upright and are dehiscent, like all true cedars.
