Monterey pine (Pinus radiata), Cone of the Month for January, 2022
Illustrated by Dreyfus
A rare tree that grows natively along the coast of California, the Monterey pine usually develops a windswept, umbrella-shaped canopy. The cones are woody and grow tight to the stems, developing a curved base on the branch-facing side.
Fun Fact: When planted away from its natural habitat, it grows straight as an arrow, often becoming an important limber tree.
