Kōyamaki (Sciadopitys verticillata), Cone of the Month for August, 2023

Illustrated by THE Alex Crowson

A botanically unique species endemic to Japan, this slow-growing conifer is monotypic, meaning it’s the only species in its genus (and family , too!). The leaves are a source of controversy: some authorities call them cladodes, which are technically stems with chlorophyll, while others call them true leaves. The name kōyamaki derives from one of its native groves on Mt. Koya in Wakayama.

Fun Fact: It’s known as the Japanese umbrella-pine in the west, though it is neither a pine nor an umbrella.

Fun Fact Part Deux: This was illustrated by cohost of Completely Arbortrary, Alex Crowson
