Gods of the North Island, the Kauri is one of the largest trees in New Zealand. Growing in ancient forests, the indigenous Māori people considered these trees to be sacred. However, due to logging, the biggest have long since been felled.
Fun Fact: Through the decomposition of their leaves, the Kauri alter the soil they grow in to their benefit.
