Jack pine (Pinus banksiana), Cone of the Month for June, 2023
Illustrated by Maddie Chaffer (@son.visual)
The jack pine is commonly found in the northeastern United States and almost all of Canada east of the Rocky Mountains. Overall a small tree, it is fire adapted and often has serotinous cones. Jack pine hybridizes with the lodgepole pine where their populations overlap in western Canada, and taxonomically they are a part of the lodgepole-jack pine species complex.
Fun Fact: This is one of the most cold-hardy of all trees known, withstanding being dipped in liquid nitrogen (-196 degrees celsius).
