Giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum), Cone of the Month for April, 2022

Illustrated by Shannon O’Hara @artohara

The giant sequoia stands out from all the other trees by being the most massive single-stemmed tree. With diameters commonly greater than 25 ft (7.6 m), heights greater than 250 ft (76.2 m), and lifetimes that span over 20 centuries, giant sequoias are a truly superlative tree. Endemic to the high alpine slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountains in California, these trees are nearly indestructible, surviving droughts, fires, extreme cold, and battering winds.

Fun Fact: The sequoia cone may remain green on the tree for decades and must be opened by heat, as from fire.
