Austrian Black Pine (Pinus nigra), Cone of the Month for January, 2024
Illustrated by Shawna Duan
This is a common tree in its native habitat, the mountains of Central Europe. It’s also commonly planted across the United States as a landscape tree. It produces a prolific cone crop and has two needles per fascicle. In the landscape, it can be confused with the Japanese black pine (P. thunbergii) and the red pine (P. resinosa) but can be told apart by the obvious spiral pattern at the base of its larger cone and by its dark black bark.
Fun Fact: This is the most common species used for reforestation in the Mediterranean.
