Ghost Pine (Pinus sabiniana), Cone of the Month for October, 2023

Illustrated by Lianne Pflug

A tree of the foothills encircling the central valley of California, the ghost pine appears as an ephemeral wisp amongst the oaks. It also has a giant cone, up to 8 in. long and 6 in. in diameter, much like its close relatives, the Coulter and Torrey pines. It is a fire-adapted species that depends on local jays for seed dispersal.

Fun Fact: The large seed of the ghost pine has been in the diets of the indigenous people of California for thousands of years.
