European larch (Larix decidua), Cone of the Month for May, 2022
Illustrated by Dorothy Siemens @dorothydotcool
One of the few deciduous conifers, the European larch grows at high altitudes in three distinct populations, the main one being in the Alps of northern Italy. The cones grow upright on the twigs and the needles are borne in clusters on spur shoots. The cones remain on the tree for many years.
Fun Fact: The young cones (as pictured here) mature in one year and are bright pink when they emerge.
