Ponderosa Pine Sticker

Ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa), Cone of the Month for May, 2023

Illustrated by Colete Martin

One of the most iconic trees of the west, the ponderosa pine grows in dry forests where there’s just enough water to support large growing trees. It is one of the largest of all pine species (biggest and tallest) and grows in open, park-like forests that historically were kept clean by frequent, low-intensity wildfires. The puzzle-piece bark of the ponderosa pine flakes off, leaving a mosaic of browns, oranges, and yellows.

Fun Fact:

Q: Does the bark smell like a) vanilla or b) turpentine?

A: c) butterscotch
