Coulter pine (Pinus coulteri), Cone of the Month for October, 2021
Illustrated by Ruska Berghäll
This Southern Californian pine tree has the biggest (read: scariest) cones of all the pines at up to 12 lbs (5.5 kg). Growing to 140 ft (~43 m), this three-needle pine towers over the Chaparral on dry slopes and ridges.
Fun Fact: For obvious reasons, this cone is commonly referred to as “The Widowmaker”.
