Canada Yew (Taxus canadensis), Cone of the Month for December, 2022

Illustrated by Lianne Pflug

A shrubby native of eastern North America, the Canada yew grows in the understory of late successional forests. Similar to junipers, it has evolved to attract animals as seed dispersers. Though a conifer, the cone has been reduced and modified to have only a single seed with a single scale that now wraps around the seed and becomes red and succulent.

Fun Fact: All parts of the yew are toxic except for the red aril itself.
