Bristlecone fir (Abies bracteata), Cone of the Month for March, 2022

Illustrated by Lan Truong

A rare species of North American fir, the bristlecone fir is found only in the Santa Lucia Mountains near Monterey, California. The cone scales have long extended bracts, giving it a spiky appearance.

Fun Fact: Like all true firs, the cones stand upright and fall apart scale by scale to spread their seeds (this is called dehiscence).
