Balsam Fir (Abies balsamea), Cone of the Month for November, 2022
Illustrated by Josselyn Richards-Daniels
A true fir that grows in northeastern North America, the balsam fir prefers cool climates and thrives in moist areas. Commonly found with species of spruce and aspen, it characterizes the classic boreal fores spruce/fir pairing that can be found across the northern reaches of the globe. Like all true firs, the cones grow upright on the top-most branches of the tree.
Fun Fact: “Balsam” refers to the sap resin of this tree, and the word itself comes from the Hebrew ‘basam’, meaning ‘spice’ or ‘perfume’.
